Supporting Intercultural and High-Achieving Couples Toward Lasting Connection

Lasting Connection for Intercultural and High-Achieving Couples

Evidence-based and research-informed methods that support lasting relationship change.

Relationship strain does not necessarily mean a partnership is broken. In intercultural or bicultural marriages, tension often reflects differences in upbringing, communication styles, family expectations, and unspoken cultural scripts. For high-responsibility couples, professional stress and leadership roles can further amplify these dynamics.

My work integrates attachment science, trauma-informed care, systems theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), cognitive-behavioral couples therapy (CBCT), and Gottman-informed strategies to help couples:

• Identify and interrupt negative interaction cycles
• Strengthen emotional safety and trust
• Navigate cultural differences with clarity and respect
• Develop structured communication and problem-solving skills
• Rebuild connection without sacrificing individual identity

When requested, faith themes may be thoughtfully integrated within clinical and ethical boundaries. Therapy remains grounded in research while honoring each couple’s values and spiritual commitments.

Integrative Couples Therapy for Intercultural and High-Achieving Relationships

Attachment-Based and Trauma-Informed Approaches for Lasting Emotional Connection

Relationship strain does not necessarily mean a partnership is broken. It often reflects recurring interaction patterns shaped by attachment history, cultural background, stress, and life transitions.

In intercultural and bicultural relationships, differences in upbringing, communication styles, family expectations, and emotional expression can intensify these cycles. Rather than pathologizing these differences, therapy helps clarify how they influence emotional safety and connection.

My work integrates attachment science, trauma-informed care, systems theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman-informed interventions, cognitive-behavioral couples therapy (CBCT), Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed work, and couples EMDR for relational trauma. Treatment is tailored to the complexity of intercultural, high-achieving, and faith-sensitive partnerships when relevant.

This integrative framework supports emotional connection and structured skill-building, helping couples understand interaction cycles, strengthen trust, repair ruptures, and build sustainable patterns of communication and resilience.

Types of Therapy

Systems-Based Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is grounded in systems theory, which views relationship challenges as patterns shaped by individual histories, family-of-origin experiences, cultural values, and life transitions. This perspective focuses on understanding interaction cycles rather than assigning blame.

Emotionally Focused & Attachment-Based Interventions

Using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) and attachment-based concepts, therapy focuses on identifying negative cycles, understanding emotional needs, and strengthening emotional responsiveness and connection within the relationship.

Gottman-Informed Couples Therapy

Gottman-informed strategies offer practical tools to improve communication, manage conflict more constructively, and strengthen friendship and intimacy. Interventions are tailored to each couple’s goals and readiness.

Cognitive-Behavioral Couples Therapy (CBCT)

A structured, goal-oriented approach that helps couples identify unhelpful thought patterns, reduce conflict escalation, and develop practical communication and problem-solving skills to improve relationship functioning.

Trauma-Informed Couples Therapy

An integrative approach that recognizes how past trauma and attachment wounds impact emotional regulation, trust, and connection. Therapy focuses on building safety, understanding triggers, and strengthening relational resilience at a pace that supports stability and healing.

PREPARE/ENRICH

Prepare/Enrich is a research-based assessment and relationship enrichment program designed for premarital and married couples. It helps couples strengthen their relationship by exploring communication patterns, conflict resolution styles, personality dynamics, values, and areas of strength and growth, while building practical skills to support long-term connection and resilience.

SYMBIS

Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts – A structured premarital program that helps engaged couples prepare for marriage by exploring expectations, communication styles, personality differences, and practical skills for navigating life together successfully.

FAQs

How long does couples therapy typically take?
Many couples experience meaningful improvement within 3–6 months of weekly sessions. Some couples notice shifts sooner, while others benefit from longer-term work depending on the complexity of concerns and goals.
What if my partner is reluctant to attend couples therapy?
This is very common. We can discuss concerns together and focus on creating a respectful, balanced space where both partners feel heard. Sometimes beginning with one session is helpful.
Do you offer premarital counseling?

Yes. I offer structured premarital counseling that includes an assessment (Prepare/Enrich or SYMBIS), personalized feedback, and skills-based guidance in communication, conflict resolution, and shared values.

Premarital counseling is offered as a structured package with a fee of $1,500.
Assessment tools are administered through the program and require a small per-partner fee charged directly by the assessment provider, separate from my practice fee.

Can you help intercultural or bilingual couples?
Yes. Supporting interracial, intercultural, and bilingual couples is a core part of my work.
Can faith be integrated into couples therapy?

Yes. For couples who value Christian faith or spiritual commitments, therapy can incorporate faith-informed reflection when requested. Clinical methods remain evidence-based, and spiritual themes are integrated thoughtfully within professional boundaries.

What should we expect in the first couples therapy session?
The first session focuses on understanding your relationship history, current challenges, and shared goals, as well as discussing how we’ll work together moving forward.
